Vikings Cage The Bears

The Midway Vikings caged the Butler Bears 48-35 on Friday, September 22. The Vikings scored first with a run up the middle by Jake Purtle.  The PAT was good, but Butler scored right after by taking the kickoff back for a touchdown and a good PAT, ending the first quarter with a score of 7-7. Purtle started the second quarter with a dive play up the middle for an easy TD and good PAT.  Butler answered back with a long pass for a touchdown and good PAT. The Vikings scored again with a pass from Josh Yahnig to Xavier Mendoza down the sideline and the PAT was good again. The Vikings then scored off a scoop and score by Kaylob Adams with the PAT yet again being good. The Vikings scored their fourth touchdown in the second quarter by another pass by Yahnig, but this time to Braydon Anderson with the PAT being good again. Butler scored by a hail mary before the end of the half and made the PAT, ending the first half with a score of 35-21. The Vikings scored first in the second half with a long run up the middle by Purtle and the PAT being good. But Butler scored the next drive with their quarterback running the ball in for the 2-point conversion. Then Butler scored off a scoop and score also with the PAT being no good, ending the third quarter with a score of 42-35. Midway scored on another run by Purtle but a missed snap would lead the 2-point conversion to be no good, ending the game with a score of 48-35.

The Viking offense had a total of 420 yards on offense with 271 being rushing and 149 being passing. The leading ball carrier was Purtle with 30 carries for 202 yards, then Mendoza with 11 carries for 42 yards and Dalton Phillips with 6 carries for 11 yards. Yahnig with 10 for 14 on passing. His leading receiver was Mendoza with 6 catches for 96 yards, then Anderson with 2 for 28 yards, and Ike Riggs and Purtle with 1 catches each Riggs with 20 yards and Purtle with 5 yards.

The Vikings defense held the Bears to 241 total yards. Justin Hineman, Purtle, Riggs, Spencer Smith led in unassisted tackles with 3 each. Boog Chandler and Thomas Endecott both with 2. Leading the team in assisted tackles is Riggs and Purtle with 4. Adams and Smith both finishing with 3 unassisted tackles. The secondary intercepted 2 passes, Cameron Stricker with one for a return of 4 yards and Hineman with the other one for a return of 30 yards. Adams picked up a fumble and returned it all the way for a 48 yard touchdown.

Midway punted the ball twice. Purtle punted one for 35 yards and Riggs punting another for 33 yards. Mendoza had one punt return for 14 yards.

The Vikings will line up against the Rich Hill Tigers for Midways homecoming Friday Sept. 29, kickoff at 7pm.
