School-Wide Information System SWIS

  • By focusing on PBIS, educators create an environment that helps all students achieve significant changes in behavior. When implemented correctly, PBIS promotes a more positive school climate, safer learning environments, and more trusting and respectful student-teacher relationships. PBIS recognizes that students can only meet behavior expectations if they know what the expectations are. Everyone learns what’s considered appropriate behavior. And they use a common language to talk about it. Throughout the school day, in class, at lunch, and on the bus, students understand what’s expected of them. A school-wide matrix of expectations can be found in every classroom at Midway.

According to research, PBIS leads to better student behavior. In many schools that use PBIS, students receive fewer office discipline referrals, detentions, and suspensions. They also earn better grades. Midway uses our SWIS software to track student behavior such as when, where, and why behaviors are happening. At monthly meetings we go over this data to determine what kind of support students need to be more successful. There's also evidence that PBIS may lead to less bullying. Midway has a two-time national award winning anti-bullying program called "Ultimate Upstanders". We assess student and staff feelings about the school climate using various assessments. We agree with the data. Midway is a great place to be!
